p01ntless in St Andrews

Excerpt from score

I have a new work 'p01ntless' being performed at a lunchtime concert in St Andrews on Wednesday 30 September:

The piece was 'commissioned' by two ex-students of mine, violinist Inês Soares and pianist Baichuan Hui. I say 'commissioned' – no money changed hands, rather they asked me to write it following a chance meeting in the RCS cafe bar.

I wrote a little bit about the piece in a previous blog post, and then kind of forgot about it: I only just found out that they are going to play it.

Coming back to the piece after a couple of weeks away feels… a little odd! I don't feel like I remember much about writing it, and I'm not sure right now that I understand my own work at all. I'm not sure that I now like either the title or the programme note. At the time, I was feeling down, hence 'p0intless' – if I was titling it today it might be something more like 'j0yful'.

Inês and Baichuan are going to run the piece through for me next week: we'll see. In particular, will the conscious decision to mark no dynamics in the piece prove a disaster?
